Ismail Gulgee, Calligraphy Art, Abstraction, and a Legacy of Spiritual Expression

Ismail Gulgee (1926–2007), widely known as Gulgee, was one of Pakistan’s most celebrated modern artists and calligraphers. Born in Peshawar and later based in Karachi, he initially studied engineering before dedicating himself entirely to art. He first gained recognition as a portrait painter, producing portraits of world leaders, royalty, and prominent personalities across the Middle East and Asia.

During the 1960s, Gulgee pioneered contemporary Islamic art with the move towards abstract calligraphic painting. He developed a unique style of Calligraphy Art, combining Arabic calligraphy with contemporary abstraction, which has received international recognition for its originality, energy and spirituality.

Ismail Gulgee travelled extensively throughout the world during his career, with exhibitions in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Asia. His works are in prestigious public and private collections across the world and he remains one of the most influential figures in the history of modern art in Pakistan.
