Sufi Malang Painting by Farrukh Shahab (10x68 Inches)
It is not always easy to find a Sufi painting that captures the moment of pure wajd, when a soul leaves the world. That's what "Sufi Malang Painting" by Pakistani artist Farrukh Shahab does. This is a 10 x 68 inches oil on wood, an ultra tall, narrow, shrine-like panel. The Story and Visual Flow
At first glance you hear him before you see him, his head is thrown back, neck stretched, eyes half-closed looking up to the unseen, mouth slightly open in a silent Ya Hu, lost in sama. On his head, a blazing, solid red Turkish topi, a fez, like a drop of blood, like a burning coal of Ishq, instantly drawing your eyes to his ecstasy. His hair and beard are wild, silver-grey dreadlocks flying, face deeply lined, sculpted with thick oil, every wrinkle a zikr.
Your gaze drops down his towering body and you land in his jannat of color, his jubba is a universe of patched squares, mustard yellow, burnt orange, sky blue, leaf green, charcoal black, light grey, royal purple, dusty pink, lime, teal, all stitched together in a bold, modern checkerboard. This is the chola of a true malang, made from what the bazaar threw away, now holy. Then your eyes stop at the bottom, at his miracle hands, huge, heavy, impasto hands with pink-tipped fingers and white nails, hanging limp, surrendered, and his naked, dusty feet, rooted to earth, belonging nowhere and everywhere. The whole 68-inch column feels like a living flag, a living prayer.
Why Oil on Wood Works So Well Here
Oil on wood is perfect for this malang's ecstasy. Farrukh Shahab piles thick, buttery oil with palette knife to make the face, hands and feet literally come out of the panel in 3D, you want to touch the wrinkles. The wood support allows this extreme 10x68 inch totem format to stand tall, straight and monumental without warping, like a sacred wooden plank from a dargah. The flat, bright blocks of his patchwork jubba contrast beautifully with the deeply textured skin. Only original oil on wood can deliver this powerful combination of folk texture, vibrant color blocking and shrine-like permanence that makes this malang feel alive in your room.
