At first glance you are lost, happily lost, in a forest of brown trunks, thin, vertical, sketchy, like bamboo, like forest pillars, scratched in oil, cutting the canvas into secret rooms. Between them, birds, dozens of them, purple, blue, green, orange, brown, yellow, flying, perched, beaks long, wings open, chirping in paint. You have to look twice to find her, a woman, reclining, almost invisible, camouflaged into the jungle like a goddess of the forest.
Her body is made of white, pink and pale yellow translucent washes, abstract, fragmented, not solid, her arm stretched high, hand open, reaching up through the branches to touch a bird, as if calling them, as if she is one of them. On the left, a green parrot watches, on the right a cluster of brown birds huddle near her knees, above a magenta bird dives. Below, sharp green grass blades and a blue water line hold her. To the left, a strange, masked face, perhaps a tiger, perhaps a spirit, watches over her. The whole surface is a web of scratchy black lines, like thorns, like vines, like the artist's own breathing, holding the chaos together. The paint is thin, stained, scraped, layered, alive.
