Sufi Devotion by Ali Abbas Syed
“Sufi Devotion” is an original 11 x 30 inch vertical watercolor on paper by Ali Abbas Syed, painted 2021. This intimate work focuses on one dervish – his face, hand gesture, and absolute surrender to divine love.
The foreground dervish reaches forward, index finger pointing upward in “tawheed” gesture. His weathered face, matted hair, and red cloth show years of spiritual wandering. Dust and earth cling to him. Abbas paints this with thick pigment + dry brush texture – you can feel the grit.
Behind him, other dervishes blur into warm haze with flags and drums. Abbas uses this “focus vs dissolve” technique: one figure is hyper-real, rest become spiritual energy. The vertical 11×30 format emphasizes the upward movement – from earth to sky, body to spirit.
Painted in 2021, this is from Abbas’s mid-period Sufi series. Smaller size but same master-level intensity. Tamgha-i-Imtiaz winner Abbas rarely does single-figure Sufi studies. This makes it rare for collectors.

One Dervish, Total Surrender
Unlike “Sufi Soul Gathering” with many figures, this 2021 work isolates one devotee. Abbas shows the moment of “fana” – annihilation of self. The upward finger, dusty face, torn cloth – all symbols of giving up worldly life.
This isn’t imagined. Abbas spent months with dervish communities in Sehwan and Bhit Shah. He paints real spiritual states, not romantic ideas. That authenticity is why Sufi collectors seek his work.
Vertical Watercolor Mastery
11 x 30 inches is a tough format. Too tall, paper buckles. Abbas controls water flow top-to-bottom perfectly. Warm ochre and umber tones dominate – dust, earth, desert light.
The dervish emerges from darkness while background dissolves into light. This “light from within” effect is Abbas’s trademark. UK Watercolor Master judges praised him for exactly this in 2021.
